2010 NC Steampunk Calendar & Links

The following North Carolina (and beyond) events either have a steampunk theme or include activities of interest to our readers. I've also included links to local steampunk interest groups below. If you have any additions, corrections or updates, please post a comment.  -- [Last Update:  08/02/2010 21:45]

ReConStruction (the maiden voyage of the local wing of the 10th Annual North American SciFi Convention)
Aug 5-8 (Thu-Sun) - Raleigh, NC
At the Saturday night dance at ReConStruction at the Raleigh Convention Center"Join DJ Emmet Davenport of the Clockwork Cabaret and the Clockwork Ball as she spins the “Music o’ Gears” for Steampunk ears, an anachronistic style of music that includes wide assortment of jazz, blues, goth, folk, swing, gypsy punk, dark cabaret, classical and other related genres.  Show off your best steampunk attire."   The price for this con, I have to say, is a bit steep - more than Dragon Con.  Single-day membership (admission) prices have finally been added to their website.  It's $50 each for Friday and Saturday, so to just attend the ball on Saturday you'd need to pay the $50.  But if you make a whole day of it, it might be worth the $50.  Click here for admission rates.
[updated 08/02/2010 20:25] The Clockwork Ball
Aug 28 (Sat) 9PM-2AM-ish - Pittsboro, NC

This awesome bi-monthly steampunk party is hosted by DJ Emmett Davenport, occasionally featuring a variety of musical guests, DJs, performers and vendors.  Settling into its new location in downtown Pittsboro, NC, the event is currently running as a semi-private party ("BOYB and your dancing shoes....appropriate attire is encouraged but not required.....And since we're having a party in the back of Davenport & Winkleperry, this can’t be open to just anyone--so bring pals if you'd like, but, uh, make sure you know them.").  (Google Map)  (If you're wondering, yes, this month's event is indeed being held on the same date as Carribean Carnevale at Castle MCCulloch.  When asked, many regulars indicated that they'd attended the February Carnevale and were willing to miss the summer event in favour of an August Clockwork Ball - or that they just plain prefer the Clockwork Ball.)  :-)
[added 08/02/2010 20:25] Pittsboro by Gaslight
Oct 2 (Sat) [TBA] - Pittsboro, NC

Save the date!  This event is being concocted by the folks from the Clockwork Ball, being indeed designed on the same model as their Tarboro by Gaslight events.  Stay tuned for details....
24th Annual Dragon Con

Sept 3-6 (Thurs-Mon) - Atlanta, GA
"The largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe."  This event is OMG epic.  I don't know where to start.  (Seriously, just check out their page.)
[added 08/02/2010 20:25] Librari-Con
Sept 4 (Sat) - Fayetteville, NC
Librari-con is free family friendly anime mini-convention featuring anime viewing, panels, forums, Artist Alley, CosPlay Runway, Manga Lounge and more.    Panels include a demo of making steampunk-influenced accessories, props and art from found materials.  The CosPlay Runway, although not a contest, is a great place to show off your outfits.  For info, check their website or call Katharine Rankin at 910.822.1998, ext. 232.

[tentative] Sci-Fi Literary Weekend at the Carolina Renfaire 16-17 Oct (Sat-Sun) - Concord, NC
A Sci-Fi / Fantasy Literary event is tentatively in the works for this year's Carolina Renaissance Festival on October 16th & 17th.  They are reaching out to the Steampunk community in hopes of tying this genre into the Sci-Fi/Fantasy themed weekend at the RenFest. Perhaps a Steampunk Invasion? The Renfaire's Marketing & Entertainment Director, Matt Siegel is searching for a point person that they can work with to help coordinate the effort and is looking for general feedback as well.  Contact him at matt@royalfaires.com.
The Clockwork Ball

Oct TBA (Fri or Sat) 9PM-2AM-ish - [may be in a new venue in Raleigh this month]

This awesome bi-monthly steampunk party is hosted by DJ Emmett Davenport, occasionally featuring a variety of musical guests, DJs, performers and vendors.  [Note:  Going from the normal schedule, the next one after August will be in October, but that (and the location) could change, so stay tuned.]
Upstate Steampunk Extravaganza And Meet-Up
19-21 Nov (Fri-Sun) -- Greenville, SC
Further steaminess is being plotted as we speak for the weekend before Thanksgiving. At the Greenville Marriott there will be academic panels for those of a scholarly nature and classes for those that are more fun oriented. There will be vendors, a drum circle, and the Upstate Steampunk Ball. There will be costume contests and the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Upstate Steampunk. Break out your best goggles, your spats, your hooped skirts, and your sense of humor and prepare to party like it’s 1899.  Cost is $25 for the day.  Note:  They're still looking for more vendors, presenters and general "lets have fun folks."  (Facebook Page)

Now, I'm depressed...
Seeing my name up there all by myself has caused me to sink into a mopey coma, I shall now drown myself in absinthe & lemonade. - Emmett

Re: Now, I'm depressed...
I was equally depressed to make the update, and thinking, "Emmett will be depressed when she sees this."

If you want more company on the next airship voyage (I know of several people that are way more fun than I am) I'll be happy to make that happen.

Have you looked info occasionally piping Klaude in via Skype? She'd probably be thrilled by the time zone difference. You can have someone else work the Skype part while you run the rest of the controls.

We actually have exciting plans for the next show. However, I do thank you for the offer and may take you up on it at some point.
